Signature Event: Weathering the Storm and Rebuilding after Scandal

  • The Cotton Room 807 East Main Street Durham, NC, 27701 United States (map)

With an ever changing world we're finding it more difficult to find a consistent normal. If the last few years have taught us anything, we need to have a solid team behind us who can weather the storm. Take an afternoon with your key executives and/or significant other to pause and learn how you can recover from life's storms and rebuild to be a better person -- both now and in the future.

In this afternoon of learning we'll start with a workshop from top Duke professor Dr. Bryan Sexton on Bite-sized Wellbeing in Times of Uncertainty -- The Science of Wellness. Well-being has never been more important, and new evidence-based well-being resources have never been more impressive.

When our batteries are low, it means well-being tools have to be simple, quick and obviously effective (i.e., save yoga, meditation and weight-loss for another day). This session will enlighten and entertain, while demonstrating simple strategies to use during tense times. The tone is upbeat, the science of well-being is fascinating, and access to all of the tools is free. Why? Because we are still here and we earned it.

Then for our keynote talk, we'll hear the real-life, stranger than fiction story of Amanda Knox. Amanda was falsely convicted of murdering her roommate and was later exonerrated by the Italian Supreme Court. That victory didn't restore her damaged reputation, and she found herself forever battling a false image of her, her evil doppelganger, Foxy Knoxy. Every day since, she has fought to reclaim her identity, and to find meaning in those stolen years and unjust incarceration.

Now she is sharing the invaluable lessons she's learned by shedding light on the pervasive issues of wrongful conviction, public shaming, and our frequently imperfect methods of seeking truth. We'll even have time for you to ask Amanda questions about her experience.

After Amanda's talk, join us for a social with hors d'oeuvres and drinks!

Who is Amanda Knox?

  • Amanda Knox is an exoneree, journalist, public speaker, author of the New York Times best-selling memoir, Waiting to Be Heard, and co-host, with her partner Christopher Robinson, of the podcast Labyrinths. Between 2007 and 2015, she spent nearly four years in an Italian prison and eight years on trial for a murder she didn’t commit. She has since become an advocate for criminal justice reform and media ethics. She sits on the board of the Frederick Douglass Project for Justice. After four years in prison and eight years on trial for a murder she didn't commit, Amanda Knox was definitively acquitted by the Italian supreme court, but that victory didn't restore her damaged reputation, and she found herself forever battling a false image of her.

Who is Dr. Bryan Sexton, PhD?

  • Bryan Sexton, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Duke University School of Medicine and Director of Patient Safety Center in the Duke University Health System. Dr. Bryan Sexton has captured the wisdom of frontline workers through rigorous assessments of safety, culture, teamwork, and workforce resilience. With specializations in organizational assessment, teamwork, survey development, and quantitative methods, he spends his time teaching, mentoring, conducting research, and finding practical ways of getting busy people to do the right thing, by making it the easy thing to do. He has found that results across industries, work settings, shifts, professions, and countries highlight a great deal about reliability in high-risk environments – specifically, “you are better off changing the situation, than trying to change human nature.”
